Non Fiction Fact Finders

11/21/2019

Non-Fiction Fact Finders

Second graders are fact finders as they kicked off their non-fiction unit in reading. From animal facts, to facts about volcanoes, to facts about about former United States presidents, they have decided that knowledge is power and facts matter. Did you know that the White House took eight years to build? Did you know that the tip of your nose has no bones? Non-fiction readers are surely growing their knowledge as they pay attention to details while reading text that gives them information. As they read, they are constantly thinking, "What is this book teaching me?" Each day, they are sharing new facts they have learned with their classmates.

What is MKA Character?

Second graders have been learning about MKA's Character Standards since the start of school, and in recent weeks have reflected on how characters in various story books demonstrate being confident, honest, fair, responsible, informed, respectful, friendly, or temperate. Students have seen various characters acting in ways that embody what all members of the MKA community strive to achieve. Through various types of responses, such as class discussions and written responses, scholars have extended their understanding of our eight, all-school Character Standards. Each day, students learn to reflect on their learning and friendships to consider how each experience helps them to grow as MKA scholars and members of the community.

Writers, Writers Everywhere!

11/8/2019

Second grade writers have been busy planning and drafting "small moment" stories, which culminated in celebrating their finished pieces this week. The celebration was complete with popcorn and Pellegrino! These stories, which are also called personal narratives, are pieces that are true, about the student writer, and happened in the past over a short period of time. Second graders are learning that opportunities for "small moment" stories surround them in their everyday lives, and that writers live on the look-out for these moments by keeping a list of seed ideas in their writing journals. Our writers are learning various ways to plan each story, including telling the story on their fingers, touching each page and talking out the story, planning on Post-Its, and using graphic organizers. They are learning to incorporate specific "small moment" craft techniques like including a character's feelings, dialogue, comparisons, and actions. Second graders spent several days rereading, revising, and editing their final pieces.
