Second grade scholars have loved exploring Poetry in Writing Workshop! We began the unit by reading a variety of poems: finding inspiration in the humor, beautiful language, and sometimes confusing messages. To begin the unit, we thought like poets do. We thought about words, what inspires or interests us, and what surrounds us every day. When we began to write, we learned about the different tools that poets use to enhance their poems and tried incorporating them into our own writing. In our poetry, we have utilized and experimented with tools such as line breaks, sound words, comparisons, patterns, and alliteration. Drawing upon lists we made early in our process, using our 5 senses in the outdoor classroom, and including our feelings have heightened our poems and fueled us to lengthen them as well. Next week we will be choosing two poems to publish. We can’t wait to share some of our work by reading our poems to our classmates in the coming weeks.
Writers culminated their Realistic Fiction writing unit with an all-class Realistic Fiction Writer's Celebration! For several weeks, students have worked during writing workshop to create and develop their realistic fiction characters and brainstorm realistic problems for their characters to solve. Students learned to utilize graphic organizers to plan for story elements they wanted to include in their characters' adventures and help them write their first drafts. Drafting, revising, and editing followed on paper, and then students set out to create digital versions of their story using an app called Book Creator on classroom iPads. Students learned how to voice record their stories, photograph their illustrations, type text and ultimately revise and edit again as they reread their work during the digital publishing process. The completed Realistic Fiction stories included Covers, Dedication and About the Author pages. Second-grade writers then took a little time to make some design choices and worked to customize the look and the format of their books. Second graders then reflected the digital publishing experience and shared they loved using Book Creator to publish their work! On Friday morning, students enjoyed listening to classmates Realistic Fiction stories and sharing their stories during the Writer's celebration in 2G's classroom. Congratulations to our published 2nd-grade Realistic Fiction writers!
Second graders are fact finders as they kicked off their non-fiction unit in reading. From animal facts, to facts about volcanoes, to facts about about former United States presidents, they have decided that knowledge is power and facts matter. Did you know that the White House took eight years to build? Did you know that the tip of your nose has no bones? Non-fiction readers are surely growing their knowledge and asked to pay attention to details as they read text that gives them information. As they read, the are constantly thinking, "What is this book teaching me?" Each day they are sharing new fact learned with their classmates.
This week was also a time to celebrate our love of reading with National Read Across America Week! Each year, schools all across our country celebrate Dr. Seuss and his books because many of us began reading and learned to read using his very books! To celebrate the week, students dressed up to honor a different book or participated in a challenge from Larry the Library Lion honoring a different book or author. It was fun to wear green to honor Green Eggs and Ham and wacky hats. It was especially exciting to welcome members from our community into our school to read a book of their choice and talk to the Second Graders about what they love about reading. We had so many questions! What a great week!
