Teaching with Our Writing

2/9/2017

Second graders spent this week publishing our final draft of an informational page about a person in history. This writing project, which was a collaboration between the classroom and library, culminated our Nonfiction Research Writing Unit in Writing Workshop. In this unit, students learned to use the MKA research cycle. We know to develop specific questions, read all parts of nonfiction resources, summarize what we learned into our own words, and continually return to our resources to refine our findings. As a final project, second graders worked to organize our findings into an informational page about a person in history of our choice. We included all parts of non-fiction writing into our page such as headings and sub headings, pictures with captions, important and fun facts about what makes this person important. When putting together our final drafts, students were asked to consider the purpose of non-fiction witting and what makes it interesting for us to read. Our work will be compiled into a class research book with each of our final drafts as the pages to the book. This book will live in the library and serve as a resource for others to learn about the people we researched. For this purpose, we knew we wanted our books to be informative and fun for others to read. We thought hard about how to best display our facts so that others can do their best learning with our work as a source for information. We hope you stop by the library in the future to read through our work!
