Second grade readers have been building the reading skills they will need for their upcoming class plays. First, they have been working on strategies for reading fluently. Strategies such as scooping up words in smooth phrases, reading at a Just Right pace, using meaning, rereading, and noticing dialogue tags have helped second grade readers develop smoother, stronger fluency skills. Next, second grade readers have been working on a new unit called Character Analysis, wherein they empathize with characters to deepen their comprehension. Role play activities and reader's theater have given students opportunities to build fluency and empathy so that they are ready to bring their lines to life on the stage in coming weeks. Classes are at various stages in the play preparation process, from brainstorming ideas to learning lines. Please remember to mark your calendars for our second grade plays: 2N on April 7, 2B on April 21, and 2M on May 5. We wish all of our second grade families a safe and happy spring break! | "Run, run, as fast as you can! You can't catch me . . . I'm the gingerbread man!"
