Character Standards, Writing Celebration and Book Fair!

11/10/2016

Recently, 2nd graders have been learning about our MKA Character Standards. They have reflected on how characters in various story books demonstrate being confident, honest, fair, responsible, informed, respectful, friendly or temperate. Students participated in read aloud and reading response experiences to extend their understanding of our eight, all school Character Standards.  In an effort to demonstrate responsible, kind and caring support for others, 2nd graders have brought in holiday food donations to support our Tri-Campus Food Drive for The Human Needs Food Pantry.

We held our first Writing Celebration this week!  Students have worked hard throughout the fall to brainstorm, plan, draft, edit, revise, and publish one of their small moment stories to share with their guests.  During Thursday’s celebration, teachers first shared information about the small moment writing process. Then children read stories to their individual guests, concluding the celebration with snacks and drinks provided by parent volunteers.  (Thank you to all who helped to make our celebration special!) Finally, this week the students met authors and illustrators during the Book Fair. It did not go unnoted that all writers, whether they are in second grade or professionals, go through a similar process. It was an exciting week to be a second grade scholar at Brookside!
