Second graders are learning about the power of persuasion in Writing Workshop. They have been brainstorming lists of books, places to eat, and toys/games that they enjoy and think others should try. They are learning to draft a persuasive review about one of these topics. Each persuasive review contains four important elements: a hook to catch the reader’s attention, the writer's opinion, reasons supporting that opinion, and a closing statement. Students are discovering the power of their words and are including specific details to make their pieces as convincing as possible. Ask your second grader what he/she has written a persuasive review about this week!
Mathematicians were busy this week learning how to use a table to help them solve math word problems. Students learned how to organize information in given word problems onto tables to help them note emerging patterns that them problem solve. Second Grade mathematicians now have another strategy to add to diagrams with keys to help them solve math word problems.
Also this week, students prepared to welcome and worked through scheduled rehearsals for our Primary School Grandparents & Special Friends morning! Students were ready and excited to perform for their invited guests. The second grade team would like to thank you all for your support. We enjoyed sharing information with you regarding your child's progress on this past Parent/teacher Conference Day and appreciate the time you all take to help us build a strong partnership with us to support your child(ren) on their learning journey this year. For all of our second grade families celebrating Thanksgiving, we hope you enjoy a wonderful holiday break with family and friends!
Recently, 2nd graders have been learning about our MKA Character Standards. They have reflected on how characters in various story books demonstrate being confident, honest, fair, responsible, informed, respectful, friendly or temperate. Students participated in read aloud and reading response experiences to extend their understanding of our eight, all school Character Standards. In an effort to demonstrate responsible, kind and caring support for others, 2nd graders have brought in holiday food donations to support our Tri-Campus Food Drive for The Human Needs Food Pantry.
We held our first Writing Celebration this week! Students have worked hard throughout the fall to brainstorm, plan, draft, edit, revise, and publish one of their small moment stories to share with their guests. During Thursday’s celebration, teachers first shared information about the small moment writing process. Then children read stories to their individual guests, concluding the celebration with snacks and drinks provided by parent volunteers. (Thank you to all who helped to make our celebration special!) Finally, this week the students met authors and illustrators during the Book Fair. It did not go unnoted that all writers, whether they are in second grade or professionals, go through a similar process. It was an exciting week to be a second grade scholar at Brookside!
