Second grade readers returned from spring break rested and ready to launch a new reading workshop unit, Reading to Answer Questions. Second graders understand that readers read for many purposes, such as finding information, learning a lesson, or enjoying a story. Another purpose for reading is to show our understanding by answering questions. Second graders are beginning to practice reading short passages and answering multiple choice questions based on what they read. Specific strategies help readers answer questions correctly, such as reading the directions first, reading all of the answer choices before choosing one, crossing out answers that are incorrect, determining fact vs.opinion, and seeking out the main idea. In the coming days, second graders will practice applying these strategies as they develop their ability to read with a purpose.
