Grade 2 enjoyed its last writing celebration of the year this week as families gathered to celebrate all their young writers have accomplished. In preparation for Tuesday’s celebration, students drafted poems incorporating various “poetry ingredients,” such as repetition, onomatopoeia, and alliteration. Students then chose, revised, edited, and published two poems to share with an audience. Children practiced reading their poems aloud to build fluency and confidence. At our celebration on Tuesday, children read one poem aloud to the group and one privately to their guests. Afterward, what fun it was to gather as a whole grade on the back field for a picnic with pizza and ice cream treats!
Second graders will wrap up their Writing Workshop work for the year by crafting Small Moment stories. Next week, they will also collaborate with classmates to write a special keepsake collection of poems together, modeled after Margaret Wise Brown’s book, The Important Book. It is wonderful to reflect on students’ work and to notice how much they have grown as writers this year.
