Persuading is Fun!

12/17/2015

2nd grade celebrated their accomplishments as writers this week!  Students wrapped up their persuasive writing work as our Persuasive Reviews writing unit came to a close. Writers worked to craft reviews to persuade others to try (or not try) something. They learned that using an engaging hook, stating their opinion, including several detailed reasons and a strong closing will help them to persuade other to take action. Students proudly shared their work with classmates, confidently reading their published pieces aloud and then placing their first and final drafts of their work on display for others to enjoy and note the persuasive review writing process.

The 2nd grade team sends best wishes for a wonderful winter break! We looking forward to seeing everyone again in the New Year!

2B Play and Hour of Code

12/10/2015

2B actors and actresses shined on the Brookside stage as they performed their class play, What Animals Really Like. The play was based on the picture book with the same title by Fiona Robinson. In a play that challenged assumptions and stereotypes, students showed what happens when animals can show what they really like to do, not what society expects them to do. Throughout the past several weeks, the children were busy learning lines, cues, song lyrics, and movements to bring their play to life. Students collaborated through every phase of the play process, from envisioning the animals who would be in the play, to imagining the talents these animals might show, to designing the scenery, posters, and programs. The stars of the 2B play encouraged us all to look beyond stereotypes and to really get to know one another. 2B would like to thank their families and all of the faculty and staff who helped them to make their play process a successful and joyful learning experience.

Also noteworthy this week, second graders joined students across the nation in participating in an Hour of Code. This is "a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics." (code.org) Building on last week’s learning, students were ready to jump into several hands-on experiences. Working collaboratively, second graders built block mazes with specific numbers of turns, then used words/commands that provide specific directions and instructions to guide a moving object in navigating the maze successfully. Trying to make our mazes navigable for Hexbugs required lots of critical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills. It also required students to test and revise their maze and programming language. Students then used iPad apps to further explore the basics of computer programming.  Second graders understand now that coding is a language, much like the languages they speak. Our Hour of Code experience was engaging and exciting for all!

Problem Solving and First Steps Towards Coding

12/4/2015

Mathematicians were busy this week learning a new strategy to help them solve word problems, manipulatives. Manipulatives, are essentially tactile objects that help to make abstract concepts in math, visible and concrete. They serve as a visual representation of information provided in a given word problem. Utilizing them to problem solve gives our 2nd graders a resource to  answer questions being posed in word problems and helps them check their work. Also this week, students started dabbling in concepts of coding. 2nd graders watched a short video clip that helped introduce the concept of computer programming. They learned how programmers use a special language or code to make things run and that code is a set of specific instructions or steps that a computer can carry out. Students tried maze activities on grid paper and used blocks to begin to consider what instructions or coding commands they might use to get a moving object from a starting point to an end point. More coding concept activities will follow next week as we plan to participate in activities centered around the Hour of Code events that take place the week of December 7th. Also in the spotlight this week, 2B actors began rehearsals on stage in preparation of their class play, What Animals Really Like, which makes its Primary School debut on Friday, December 11th. 2nd graders are excited for the upcoming performance and are counting down the days to next Friday!
