This month in social studies, second graders are exploring a new tool: atlases! The children have discovered that atlases contain pictures, graphs, and maps to help us learn about places in the world. After an initial exploration of their student atlases, students worked on a project where they identified their name, school, neighborhood, town, state, country, and planet. An important teaching point during our geography unit is that United States is divided up into regions, or areas, with similar characteristics such as weather and climate. Second graders will learn about each region in the coming weeks. As they begin to explore the U.S. map in depth, second graders are eager to discover states they have visited and states to which they hope to travel someday.
