2nd grade writers were hard at work this week preparing for their Realistic Fiction Writing Celebration on Wednesday, March 5th. After editing and revising the first drafts of their realistic fiction stories, student authors created illustrations to accompany their work. The last stage of the publishing process for this unit, required students to utilize iPads to create digital versions of their work that included audio recordings of themselves reading their stories. Students enjoyed problem-solving to customize and add interactive elements to their digital books. They will be using iBooks to share their published Realistic Fiction stories with family and friends on Wednesday morning. We look forward to celebrating all of the terrific work students did during this unit of study!
2S performed their play, The Magic Raincoat. Today's performance was a culmination of a tremendous amount of time, effort, and preparation by the students. After choosing the book and the "big message" that they hoped to communicate to the audience through their performance, the children played an active role in all parts of the play process. The children helped select songs and write the lines for an original script inspired by the book; they even wrote the lines of one of their songs (Row, row, row your boat). Additionally, the children pulled together and made the absolute best of having limited rehearsal time prior to the play due to snow days and a long weekend. Thank you to Ms. DuRant, Mrs. Smith, Ms. Weaver for your help and support throughout the play process. Thank you to Mr. Brown for helping set up the chairs. Finally, THANK YOU to our parents and families for all of your help, love, and support. We love you!
On Wednesday afternoon, parent volunteers stepped in as "guest teachers" while Second Grade teachers joined fellow faculty members for a special luncheon for Faculty Appreciation Day. Upon returning to the classroom, Mrs. Bates, Mrs. Noble, and Ms. Sarma were each presented with custom class scrapbooks filled with messages of thanks and detailed illustrations from the children. Look for each book proudly displayed in second grade classrooms. Special thanks to all the parent volunteers who helped make this a memorable event for all! The Second Grade Team feels fortunate to be working with such a thoughtful, generous, and creative group of children!

Mathematicians have been applying subtraction strategies this week. Students practiced using strategies like counting up and back and using Base-10 blocks to help them subtract 2-digit by 2-digit problems. Math Station times offered students minute math fact subtraction practice to help them recall basic subtraction facts. Playing the Number Grid Difference game during morning and choice times kept the subtraction fun going!
